Claire Van Vuuren is chef and co-owner of Bloodwood, Newtown and the recently opened Popla in Bellingen. The new restaurant, Popla Bellingen, is a produce-driven venture and a smaller-scale, creative outlet for Claire and co-owner Mitchell Grady. The menu is focused on making the most of the produce-rich northern rivers region and showcasing the best of local ingredients; the drinks list is 100 per cent Australian.
Alongside her hours in the kitchen, Claire has consistently focused on being part of her local community and giving back to the industry. She is a founding board member of Women in Hospitality, which supports and mentors hospitality professionals, and of Newtown Locals, a collective of Newtown restaurants and bars working with the local community to address homelessness in Newtown. Claire is also a 2018 ‘Porkstar’, a campaign that uses chefs to promote a better pork industry, and a judge for the 2018 Food Service chef of the year.
