Many people view the beginning of a new year as a chance to make a fresh start, to give up old unhealthy habits and to overhaul their lives. Unfortunately, only 5% of all New Year resolutions are ever followed through to fruition.
Why is this?
Our habits are formed by the two parts of our mind, conscious and unconscious, working together to make our lives easier. So, to break a habit that we may have had for many years, is not as simple as many of the “self-help” books would have us believe. It is not simply a matter of willpower, but a desire for change that focuses completely on the benefits of the new way of being and total belief that the new way of life is going to lead to more happiness. It is unlikely that anyone will break a habit if it will lead to misery and discomfort.
Often we think of New Year as a time to give something up, when perhaps what we could focus on is the extra health, happiness, joy, personal growth, confidence, self-worth or love that we will gain from our choices. Here’s to a fabulous 2010!
