How important is Confidence?
There is a common thread amongst those who come for coaching - reporting an experience of low or no confidence in their personal or professional lives. Having recently researched confidence, it is surprising to discover there’s a town in California called Confidence. Even more interesting - the town of Confidence is located just after ‘Turnback Creek’!
It’s not surprising people give up looking for Confidence at this point. Turnback Creek is situated at an altitude of 4,000 feet; ‘Confidence’ is just 200 feet higher – not far past Turnback Creek…
This is the experience many often report – instead of continuing their ‘journey’, a lack of confidence can appear like the ‘Turnback Creek’ sign, where they do a ‘u-turn’ or remain ‘stuck’ in their current situation.
Physically, a mountain with an altitude of 4,200 feet is a difficult climb. Metaphysically, confidence seems also difficult to attain – as if climbing a mountain and never seeming to reach the peak.
The town of Confidence has a population of only 50 people. Is that because not many people experience or possess confidence? Or maybe they just give up - the journey becoming all too hard, as they believe they don’t have the confidence to go for what they want?
“Your focus determines your reality”. Ask yourself: What are you paying attention to – your dreams and aspirations, or the beliefs that you’ve formulated that say you CAN’T have it, or don’t DESERVE it? Whatever it is, this will be exactly what you are creating.
You need to be clear, so you can focus on what you really want in order to take the right action that will take you from ‘where you are’ to ‘where you want to be’.
Read that line again. Now really read it.
Whether you are feeling confident or not, has nothing to do with who you are or what you want. Thoughts and feeling states change from day to day, moment to moment. Instead, make it about what you want rather than how you’re feeling and thinking and by shifting your focus, notice what obvious action will take you toward your ‘end result’.
The locals of Confidence report that once people reach their town, they can do anything, go anywhere and be whoever they want to be. This can be your experience too – both personally and professionally. When focussed on your ‘end result’ you will know the right action to take and have energy to go for it. In doing so, confidence will come and rest gently on your shoulder, without you even noticing - you’ll be too busy celebrating the effortless achievement of your desired ‘end result’!
